Passage: John 16:12-15

SERMON NOTES:

  • "We should not just explain the information in the text but also the burden of the text—that is, why was this written? What was the situation that was going on at that time? In particular, what was the struggle of God’s people in that moment? The Holy Spirit did not just say, Here’s some random information you ought to know, there was something going on that required the writing of that text. We should ask, What is the context of the text?

How are we like them? How is their struggle our struggle?"

– Bryan Chappell

  • Jesus is about to be betrayed, tried and crucified. He is about to be raised from the dead, appear to his followers a number of times, and then ascend to heaven.

  • “I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you.  But now I am going to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world sis judged."

– John 16:4–11

  • Why do these things matter?
    • First of all, the full revelation that God is Tri-une  (three-in-one) is the truth.
    • All of the godhead is at work in creation and redemption.
    • All of God loves us.
    • The basis of all relationships come from the fact that God is a trinity.
    • He has not left us.
  • The presence of God to His people is unchanged.
